Statement
Ken was born in Trier, Germany while his father was based in Germany. Growing up in a military family, he had the opportunity to travel to various places throughout the United States and other countries. His mother is Italian, so he also had the opportunity to visit his relatives in Italy and Germany. His father was stationed in Montgomery, he graduated high school from Stanhope Elmore in Millbrook and remained in Montgomery after graduation. Visiting Art exhibitions around the world has helped him see something more than just a piece of wood or marble when he holds it in his hands. He says he is basically self-taught, with the investment of time and work, this is leading him on a wonderful journey into this type of art. As an emerging artist, he followed the advise of his fellow Gallery One member artists and began entering competitions. Thornton Clark, President of the Montgomery Art Guild says, ”Having begun woodturning in the great old class at Cloverdale way back in 1949, I know how incredible the work of Ken Lever is. It is hard enough turning beautiful pieces and when you add in his skill of geometrical carving the piece he has first turned on his lathe, it adds a lot to the complexity and beauty of the work."<>When it comes to wood, he says he is a total scavenger. If there is an interesting piece on the side of the road, he has to stop and take a look to see if he thinks it has potential. It is as if the wood speaks to him, telling him what it wants to be. A hobby once used as a great stress reliever, has turned into the creative joy of transforming a piece of wood into a beautiful and unique piece of art. He attended the Fourth Annual Magic of Marble Festival in Sylacauga, Alabama. Now he is off on another artistic adventure.
